ORion-PI Express Handling Is The " Best Product 2009"

The software ORion-PI Express handling of Axxom has been awarded among more than 700 exhibitors as „Best Product 2009" in the category "Software, Communication, IT" at international trade fair LogiMAT. ORion-PI Express handling enables the introduction of so called express areas wherein a picking performance of more than 1.200 picks/person/hour can be achieved without expensive investments in high-automated warehouse technology.

The introduction of express areas with ORion-PI Express handling leads to a paradigm shift in logistics. Unlike the assignment of products according to frequency e.g. in conventional fast, medium and slow moving areas, articles are now stored according to order structure. Products are assigned to the express area in such a way, that as many orders as possible can be completed there. By this, orders only have to run through express stations and not through different picking areas.

Key factor of success is the assignment of the express areas with the proper article spectrum, considering many constraints. Here, results depend very much on the quality of the algorithm, which identifies the right article spectrum for assembling the express area, considering a lot of restrictions and constraints. While common software often generates no savings and sometimes even cause more efforts, an intelligent solution can achieve significant improvements.

ORion-PI Express handling therefore uses an especially for this task developed algorithm. It allows the selection of the „right" article spectrum for the express station, so that a maximum number of orders in the express station can be completely processed. The software also allows the definition of load restrictions for the express station and considers many restrictions. Depending on the capacity of the express area and the order structure, between 10 and 70 percent of orders can be completed in the express area.

With ORion-PI Express handling and the introduction of express areas, efficiency in picking increases, significant savings can be realized and service levels can be improved. In typical projects we achieved cost savings of millions of Euro and reduced delivery times significantly. Studies showed, that picking times have been reduced by 50 percent compared to two-level picking and up to 65 percent compared to order-based picking.

Among more than 700 exhibitors at LogiMAT 2009, International Trade Fair for Distribution, Materials Handling and Information Flow, the most innovative products have been awarded, contributing significantly towards rationalisation, cost-savings and increasing productivity in intralogistics. The ‘Best Product' award is now in its sixth year and the categories are "Software, communication, IT", "Order picking, packaging, protection", "Procurement, handling, storage".

The winners were chosen by an independent jury that reviews the products on display ahead of LogiMAT 2009 in line with the competition requirements. The jury is made up of representatives from industry, research and the media. The award is established as one of the most coveted in the intralogistics sector.
